Fall 2017

Life continues on here in Kansas City and we have settled into our new home nicely.  We still love it, but miss our family back home.

One of the strangest things happened to Jared and I recently.  We set up an appointment with a new primary care doctor only because our insurance gives us a $25 gift care if we have an annual checkup.  I didn't do much research into finding a good PCP because Jared and I hardly ever go to the doctor other than my OB appointments.  I got a list from the RS president in my ward a while back of a bunch of random things like good places to get your car fixed, fun restaurants etc. and one of the sections was good primary care doctors.  I just picked the first one on the list, called, and set up an appointment for us.  Well WOW is all I can say about that visit.  He was THE STRANGEST person I have ever met.  Just walking into the office felt a little sketchy.  It was this random place that looked like a cabin and didn't exactly feel clean and friendly when you walked in.  We waited for a long time to be taken back.  We then waited for a while in our room when suddenly a guy walked into the room backwards.  Yes, that's right, backwards.  I didn't know for the first few minutes of him talking to us if he was actually our docctor or not. He didn't introduce himself or anything.  He also had to the leave the room multiple times for things he forgot (charts, stethoscope, etc.).  He was holding and protecting his coffee cup the whole time while he had little sips as he talked to us.  He acted very strange when Reese went up to him.  He sort of backed away and protected his coffee.  Really, really weird.  It's hard to even explain all of his weird mannerisms without being there.  He eventually did a family history on both Jared and I and he acted shocked and worried about basically everything we said.  He made it seem like we were both going to die soon because Jared's mom has osteoarthritis and my dad has Addisons.  The physical assessment he did on me just sort of gave me the jitters. Not that he touched me in a bad way but I mostly just didn't want him to touch me AT ALL.  I didn't trust him.  It was also strange when he started pushing on my 7 month pregnant belly.  He wasn't checking the height of my uterus or the baby's position so I sort of think he was trying to feel my spleen through my big belly.  It was weird!  Needless to say the whole experience made Jared and I laugh the whole way home.  Good thing we are both healthy and weren't there for any real issues because I would not trust that guy.

This second pregnancy is going really well.  Baby continues to be healthy and I feel good.  I have a little bit of lower back pain sometimes by the end of the day which I never had when I was pregnant with Reese.  It's nothing really bad though so I can't complain.  I feel good and am still able to exercise.  Only 4 more weeks until we meet the little thing and find out the gender.  It's still killing me that we don't know!

Reese is a little sponge right now.  She is learning new things every day.  She loves doing peg puzzles and I love watching her little eyes search as she tries to match the puzzle piece with where it should go.  She can say quite a few words (maybe around 20) but only says a few consistently on her own.  The others I have to ask her to say. She is sometimes the best little eater and sometimes drives me crazy because she wont even try it.  I know that's a normal toddler for you, but it's still irritating sometimes.
This is a random cow on Jared's campus that she gets so excited to see.

We try to stay busy and do lots of different activities throughout the week while daddy is gone.  Some of our favorite things to do are go to Edge gymnastics during the free play.  Reese loves jumping on all the tramps, playing in the foam pit, walking across the balance beam, and staring at all the mirrors. She also continues to love library story time.  We have tried out a few different libraries nearby.  Some seem to be a little above her age level, and some below but she still plays and has fun. She has gotten much better about going to the daycare while I work out at the gym.  She almost never cries when I drop her off anymore and is content and playing with other kids when I go to pick her up.  We play with Clark often enough that the two of them now treat each other like siblings.  Reese gets annoyed by the "little brother" Clark who follows her around and wants to play with all the same things she is playing with.  We are working on sharing but it's definitely a struggle.

We love having the playground right in our backyard!

We were able to to go to the pumpkin patch a few different times before Halloween.  The carousel and corn pit were a big hit.

We did a family theme for Halloween costumes.  I was Winnie the Pooh with my pregnant belly, Reese was Tigger, and Jared was Piglet.  Super simple outfits but it worked out well.  We even won an award at our ward Halloween party.

We traveled down to Tulsa for Thanksgiving this year to spend it with Brandon/Becca and their five kids as well as Adam/Heidi.  It really was a lot of fun although almost everyone ended up getting sick with the 24 hour flu.  One morning we woke up and both the twins and Nora had been puking.  It gradually made its way through most of the people there.  Somehow Reese and I didn't get sick.  Jared was never throwing up either but he had diarrhea and didn't feel well.  It was still great seeing them, hanging out, eating food, and looking at Christmas lights.  It's nice they aren't too far of a drive away.

We will be staying here for Christmas and New Years this year because I'll be expecting the baby to come any day.  Part of me is sad we'll be alone with no family around.  Another part of me is SO excited to hang out with just Jared and Reese.  There are so many fun things to see and do around Kansas City at Christmas time.  Lots of fun lights, displays, activities etc.  I have a whole list of things to do once Jared finishes the semester.  Our first Christmas just us!

Jared wrote our Christmas card this year.  He laughed and laughed as he wrote it and once he was finished he had me read through it.  It was pretty much ridiculous and about 50% of it was about his stupid mustache.  That's Jared for you though.  We sent them out and I cringed just a little as I sent one to my mission president and others who don't know Jared all that well.  Hopefully people get a good laugh.  Here is our Christmas card picture.

We've had a few crazy storms since we moved here.  One in particular was extra bad with lots of lighting, rain, and wind.  After it was over we went outside to find tons of branches, twigs and ever large trees that had fallen.  One huge tree that was super old fell just one building over from ours and smashed a car.  Luckily no one was in the car and it didn't fall on the townhomes.  Makes me a little bit glad there are no trees right by our townhome.

I recently started working very part time for a company called Cortex.  The great thing is I work my own hours, as few or as many hours I want each week.  I make follow-up calls to patients.  I didn't have to transfer my license to a Missouri license, I just kept my Utah one and I don't need a babysitter because I just work while Reese is taking a nap.  It really has been wonderful and brings in a little extra money.

Our blessings are abundant.  Jared is rocking school, we are all healthy, and happy!  Life is great!

Our New Home!

Kansas City, Missouri is our new home!  We moved here the very end of July and have truly loved it ever since.  Moving 1000 miles away from family is always a little bit sad, but I am so excited to have a few years away and raise our little family.

We ended up renting a big 26' uhaul and split it with Adam and Heidi.  It fit all of our stuff in it and we were thrilled to share the cost.  We made the trip in two days.  We stopped in Colorado in the dumpiest most run down hotel which was super cheap.  It ended up being so perfect though because the guy at the front desk was SUPER nice.  When we mentioned that we would need to leave before their continental breakfast opened he said he'd be happy to have some waffles made for us in the morning whenever we needed them.  He really was great.  The only problem we came across during our travels was that on the second day the uhaul air conditioner went out... That made for a long drive for Adam and Jared who were the uhaul drivers.  We luckily got some money back from uhaul after I sent in a complaint, so the guys didn't suffer in vain.

We got to North Brighton Townhomes Monday afternoon just in time to get a key to Adam and Heidi's townhome.  Unfortunately ours wasn't done for about another week so we had to cram in with them for a few days.  It was great that they were willing to host us and let us take over their living room with boxes.  I was thrilled when we finally got a key to our place and I could start unpacking.  I was very ready to settle in and start feeling like we were home.

Jared started orientation just a few days after we got here.  He was a little nervous starting this new adventure but once it all started he was very excited.  He has met some great friends and he, of course, always has Adam who he knows.  Jared has worked really hard these first few weeks in his classes.  He finished biochem and just started immunology.  He has already had his ups and downs but for the most part it has been ups!  He is very focused and wants to put himself in the best position possible to pick whatever specialty he wants to do when the time comes.

We have really loved exploring Kansas City and trying out all the new things it has to offer.  Just a few of the things we have done so far.
-Trying Kansas City BBQ.  It is AMAZING!
-Went camping at the beautiful Smithville Lake.  The weather was perfect!

-Explored Weston MO which is an old town that has lots of cute shops and things to see.  They also have a Lewis and Clark exhibit explaining when they came and stopped in Weston.
-Went to a Kansas City Royals baseball game, thanks to the school.

-Went with a bunch of friends to a Kansas City Chiefs football game.
-Enjoyed the Kansas City Zoo with some ward members.

-Tried out lots of different parks and splash pads.

Another really cool thing we got to experience was the total eclipse!  That was more amazing than I thought it was going to be.  People traveled from all over to Kansas City because we are in a point of totality.  The morning of the eclipse it was super cloudy and down pouring.  I thought there was no way we would be able to see it.  In the end, everything cleared up just in time for the eclipse.  We watched as the day suddenly turned to night and back to day again.  It got SO dark.  The automatic street lights turned on and so did the temple lights.  It looked amazing.  Even Reese seemed shocked and confused by what was going on.

Reese's little personality has developed a lot over just the last month or two.  She loves dancing to any song that turns on.  She tends to put one hand up in the air and sways her hips side to side.  The best is when it's a calm, peaceful church song that she is rocking out to.  She really really really loves books.  We get new books from the library each week and she is constantly bringing me a book she wants read to her.  She is going through a little bit of a frustrating eating phase.  If Jared and I don't pay any attention to her while she is eating she usually does a great job.  If she notices we are watching then she typically spits it out or drops it on the ground or some other frustrating gesture.  I don't know why this happens, but we do our best to ignore her.  She has become obsessed with giving people and stuffed animals loves.  She frequently goes through all her stuffed animals, pulling them out one by one, and gives each one loves.  She goes up and gives Clark loves all the time.  Right before bedtime she gives Jared and I about 10 hugs each.  It's pretty cute.  We are working a lot on learning words and pointing to body parts right now.  Her favorites are tongue (she sticks it out) ears (she grabs them and wiggles them) and legs.  Although she still isn't saying many words, she loves making animal sounds.  She picks up her stuffed animal monkey and makes a oooooh ooooh oooooh noise, she also likes to make an owl sound.  I love watching her learn and soak things in.

She still has her little umbilical hernia although I do think it has gone down some.  I hope that it goes away completely so that we don't have to look into surgery in the future.  Reese is still lacking in the hair department.  She doesn't have much, and what she does have is blond and thin.  Today was my first day attempting to put a little ponytail in it.  Although there wasn't much hair to work with, I still thought it was pretty cute.

I take Reese to the little gym day care and we are still working on her not crying when I leave.  The first time she didn't care at all when I left.  She just played and it was no big deal.  On about the third time she suddenly freaked out and cries each time I take her now.  She gets over it after a few minutes and whenever I go to pick her up she is happy as can be.  It's the initial drop off that we need to work on.  Hopefully she gets over this before it's time for nursery.

Our neighbors have been much different than I expected.  I think I pictured the townhomes to be mostly filled with young people my age in similar situations in life (in school with small kids).  There are so many different people here in different age groups.  My neighbor to the left is an older lady around 60 with her son and grandson who live with her.  She is SO NICE.  The first day I was moving stuff in she came and introduced herself and let me know she is an ICU nurse and has been a NICU nurse and if we ever need help just to holler.  She ended up bringing over a cute little blue car/stroller thing that I take Reese on walks in all the time.  Our neighbors on the right moved just a few days after we moved in but they were also incredibly nice.  They are a family with 5 kids from Kazakhstan.  Because they were moving they were getting rid of a bunch of stuff.  They brought over a huge basket full of cute toys and stuffed animals for Reese that their youngest daughter had grown out of.  Reese absolutely loves them.
We have a cute little family of 3 kids (Lilly, Rylee, and Luke) who play outside all the time and Reese loves to go join them.  Another little girl (Brianna) is so cute to Reese.  It's fun seeing Reese interact with the other kids.
There are a lot of people who have lived here for 30+ years.  Many people grew up here as little kids and are now raising their own small kids here.
There are also quite a few other med students and members of the church who live at North Brighton.  In all, it really is a great place to live.  I am happy we ended up here.

We have been able to have the Elders over for dinner twice already and the sisters will be coming this Sunday.  I love that we have a closer connection to the missionaries here compared to in Utah.  They turn to the members a lot for help.

We had our 20 week ultrasound about a week an a half ago (a little late due to insurance changes).  Jared was really not wanting to find out the gender and I finally gave in.  I told him no way when we were pregnant with Reese so I decided this time we could do what he wanted.  It does stress me out a little bit feeling like if it ends up being a boy I wont be prepared but I guess I need to get over that.  At the ultrasound the tech had us close our eyes a few times to be sure we didn't accidentally see something.  It was really hard not to peek.  So far I like my new OBGYN.

Speaking of insurance, figuring out medical insurance, car insurance, renters insurance, license plates, finding new OBGYN, pediatrician, and family practice doctors, applying for WIC, setting up internet, gas, electricity and all the other random little things that go along with moving has been such a pain but I think I pretty much have it all done now!  Jared wasn't able to help with much because he started school right away so I was sort of on my own.  After many phone calls, I am feeling good!

So far our few shorts weeks here have been wonderful.  I love watching Jared progress in medical school, I love watching Reese soak in everything and learn, I love exploring this new place we live.  I just really am enjoying life right now.  We can't wait to add another little one to our family in January (or December)!

Summer Fun!

We have had a very filled summer.  Because we knew we'd be moving the end of July, both my family and Jared's family packed in trips/reunions before our move.  When we combined all the various activities, it turned out we were constantly on the move.  Here are a few fun things we were able to do this summer.

The Lewis family always does a fun Newport vacation each summer, but since Adam's parents are still gone on their mission Jared and I were lucky enough to be invited to join in on the fun.  We tried lots of fun restaurants, played at the beach, and spent plenty of time relaxing.  Jared always has the time of his life boogie boarding.

It was fun watching Reese over the course of the week get more and more comfortable with the ocean water and waves.  The first day she was definitely not a fan.  By the end we couldn't keep her away.

We have done a couple of family reunions with the Bodines before but this year Bill and Heather went all out.  They got a beautiful house in Bear Lake and we spent a few days there all together.  It was a blast.  We played lots of games, swam in the pool, and a few of us even got in the freezing cold water lake water.  Because it was so early in the summer it was quite chilly.
Cousin Jace is so sweet with Reese
The Bodine boys
All the cousins together in the infamous boat.

Jared decided to cut his hair into a bowl cut for most of the summer, finally at the reunion we all got to participate in shaving Jared's head.

After getting back from Bear Lake we all went to the Strawberry Days rodeo together.  The kids had lots of fun despite very late bedtimes.

We also had a big Robins trip in Florida that my parents planned.  The fun part of this trip was there were no grandkids.  I have never left Reese for that long so I was a little worried about how she and I would do, but it was actually really quite nice not having her!  Although when we got home I did give her lots of snuggles.  Heather, Taryn, and Andrea were my wonderful babysitters.
We went to the NASA museum and got some cool tours and learned about all the wonderful things they have done.

Probably my favorite part of the whole trip was the air boat rides.  I didn't really have a whole lot of expectations but man was it cool.  We saw lots of gators in the wild and the lake was beauitful!

We had some fun beach day.  Our first day going to the beach though it started downpouring right when we got there.  Everyone on the beach cleared out and went home except for us rockin Robins.  We had the whole beach to ourselves and it was great!
Jared went scuba diving for his first time ever.  I unfortunately couldn't go since I am pregnant with baby #2.  He really enjoyed it and I can't wait to go with him sometime.

Taryn sent me this cute picture one of the days she babysat and it made my momma heart happy.

We always love spending time at Grandpa Robins pasture in the summer. We had an Anderson reunion and rode bikes down on the Provo trail to the pasture.

Although Reese has been on a horse before as a tiny baby, this was her first time old enough to be scared and/or excited.  She seemed to really like it!

By the end of the night she had played in the dirt so much and was exhausted.

The weekend before we moved to Kansas City my girlfriends and I had a fun girls weekend.  We went up to Salt Lake, shopped around City Creek, had dinner at the Melting Pot, and had lots of laughs.  I sure am going to miss having these friends close by.

We sure have had a great summer with family and friends and are sad to be moving so far away!
